Ardizzone recorded the occasion of this work:-
'The battery absorbed all the billeting space in the village.  The officers had the sitting-room and kitchen of a cottage as their mess. The sergeants had a small estaminet while the troops slept on straw in the big barns.  The officers were found bedrooms to sleep in, and of course the best bedroom in the best house was the Major's.'
